Shock and riser pads are small washers that are mounted between the deck and the trucks. Shock pads and riser pads are usually made of polyurethane and have a rectangular shape. There are different pads for skateboards as well as for longboards. Here you will find detailed information about the difference and what you should look for when buying.
Frequently asked questions about Riserpads and Shockpads:
Skateboard Shockpad vs. Riserpads - What is the difference?
At first glance, shock pads and riser pads look the same. The rectangular shape is based on the baseplate of a skateboard truck. The biggest difference between riser pads and shock pads is the hardness of the material. Shock pads are softer and riser pads are correspondingly harder.
Another difference is the height of the pads. Skateboard riser pads are usually higher than shock pads. Accordingly, shock pads are used more for cushioning and riser pads for increasing the distance between the deck and the wheel or trucks.
When are shock pads or riser pads useful or necessary?
If you want to increase the distance between your wheels and the deck, you can do this with both shock pads and riser pads. Since most shockpads for skateboards are only 1/8″ high, you should buy riser pads for more space. The extra space will help you avoid annoying wheelbites (the grinding of the wheels on the deck). For the combination of low or mid trucks with large to very large wheels, skateboard riser pads are usually necessary. You can find out more about this in the skateboard trucks section of the shop.
If your skating is more about jumping down gaps or stairs, then we recommend the use of skateboard shock pads. As these are softer than riser pads, you can protect your deck from impacts. Skateboard shock pads can also help cushion the impact when landing.
The correct bolt length when skating with pads
When using shock pads or riser pads, you should make sure that you need longer bolts. Bolts that are too short would be fatal because you might not be able to mount them. Bolts that are too long are simply impractical and harder to tighten.
The right bolt length for shock pads and riser pads on the skateboard
The higher the pads, the longer your bolts should be. For 1/8″ shock pads, for example, we recommend a bolt length of 1″ - 1 1/8″. The following table will help you find the right combination of bolts and pads for your skateboard or cruiser. You can find more information in the skateboard wiki.
Setup | without Shock Pads | 1/8″ Shock Pads | 1/4″ Riser Pads | 1/2″ Riser Pads |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bolt length | 7/8″ – 1″ Bolts | 1″ – 1 1/8″ Bolts | 1 1/4″ Bolts | 1 1/2″ Bolts |
The right bolt length for shock pads and riser pads on longboards
You can also use shockpads on longboards to protect your board from vibrations and shocks. Longboard riser pads make your setup even more agile and steerable. The right bolt length also plays an important role here. For 1/8″ longboard shock pads, for example, we recommend a bolt length of 1 1/8″ - 1 1/4″.
There are so-called angled riser pads especially for slalom longboarding. Since these are angled, you need two different bolt lengths for these pads. More information about riser and shock pads for longboards can be found in the Longboard Wiki.
Setup | without Shock Pads | 1/8″ Shock Pads | 1/4″ Riser Pads | 1/2″ Riser Pads |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bolt length | 1″ - 1 1/8″ Bolts | 1 1/8″ – 1 1/4″ Bolts | 1 1/4″ - 1 1/2″ Bolts | 1 1/2″ Bolts |
