What does the water column mean for snowboard jackets?

Textile water columns, a value in millimeters (mm), indicate the waterproofness of your functional jacket. The water column is measured with a 10 cm² piece of the material used, in which a glass column is stretched over. This column is then filled with 10 mm of water per second. The time is measured until three drops of water have penetrated through the material.

With a water column of 5000 mm, it takes 500 seconds for three drops of water to form on the back of the material used. In short: If you are in the snow park and on groomed slopes, jackets with a water column starting at 5000 mm are suitable, since this already offers a very high water density. Do you prefer boarding through deep snow and like to tour the backcountry? We recommend water columns starting from 10000mm since more snow per area can fall on the material of your jacket.

Breathability in snowboard jackets

Breathability, also referred to as water vapor permeability indicates how many grams of water vapor can escape through the fabric of your jacket in 24 hours per square meter. The goal is to let as much moisture escape from the inside of your clothing to the outside. So that a comfortable, dry feeling during strenuous activity is possible. This helps so that you won’t sweat so much or overheat when you’re snowboarding.
