The best-shaped skateboard decks at skatedeluxe
When skateboarding shifted from the ramp to the street in the early 90s, the tricks changed as well. Skaters were looking for a skateboard to match the new style. Since then, the almost symmetrical popsicle skateboard has been dominant.
Today skateboarding is more diverse and creative. Shaped skateboard decks are becoming more popular and can be used in many ways.
This is the difference: Shaped skateboards vs popsicles
Popsicle skateboard decks look a bit like a popsicle stick when you look at them from above, hence the name. These boards are almost symmetrical. The nose and tail are equally round.
Shaped skateboard decks are shaped differently than the "classic skateboard of today". Square tail, pointed nose, extra wide wheelbase – the shapes are creative and versatile.
Good to know: even if the name may suggest it, Full Shape or "Shovel Nose" decks are not shaped decks. These are popsicle boards with a particularly wide nose and/or tail.
What special skateboard shapes are there?
Shaped decks have no uniform names or are called differently depending on the brand. However, there are common shapes that you can recognize easily.
Pool shape decks usually have a round nose, as known from popsicles. The tail is often much more angular.
Similar to those are fish shape skateboards. The fish-like shape is created by the fact that these decks are usually widest at the front truck and much narrower at the rear truck. Moreover, the tail is quite wide and rectangular, while the nose is rather pointed. These boards are often reissues or "old school boards". Fish shapes were skated a lot in the 80s. It's also characteristic that these decks have hardly any concave and the nose is almost flat.
A bit more modern are "Egg Shape" or "Football Shape" decks. Both the tail and the nose of these boards are more pointed than those of popsicles. This creates an agile and flip-friendly shape.
