Trick Tip
BS Smith Grind

Backside Smith Grinds are beautiful but not that easy. For a BS Smith Grind you grind on your back truck while you push down the front truck sideways and downwards next to the ledge or rail. Therefore, it’s good to have BS 5-0’s on lock.

By the way, did you know that there are some people calling this the Monty Grind? There are discussions whether Monty Nolder has invented this trick or not. So a few skateboarders are naming this trick after him.

1. Approach the ledge almost parallel with your your feet in the Ollie position and ollie up towards the ledge.

2. Similar to a Backside 5-0, shift all your weight on the back truck while leaning your body slighty away from the ledge.

3. As you stand on your back leg, push your front leg so that the nose of your board slanted and pressed downward next to the ledge.

This is the Smithgrind position.

4. To stay in this position you have to keep your body tense.

5. At the end of the ledge, you lift up the nose a bit by lifting on your tail and coming out of the grind.
